What should I do if a wick mushrooms?Mushrooming wicks occur when the candle's combustion rate increases, this can be all for all sorts of reasons such as room temperature or draughts. The good news is that they are not at all harmful. The only issue is that when you relight your candle it will produce a large flame until the carbon ball has burnt off. To avoid simply pinch the mushroom off the wick before you relight it. This also has the added bonus of a much more even burn.
-
What should I do if my candle starts tunnelling? Our wax is very soft so if your candle starts to tunnel down and leave wax on the side of the container it is very easy to fix. Just burn your candle for longer. Around 4 hours at a time and it will soon burn evenly. The easiest way to prevent this is to make sure the first time you burn your candle that it burns to the edges of the container. This is really important with tin candles which are wider and shorter than glass container candles.

What type of wax is used in Bougie Lab candles and wax melts? We use a "Cocosoy" blend in our candles which is a combination of Coconut and Soy waxes which we believe to be the best due to the eco-credentials of the blend. Additionally the lower melting point of the coconut wax allows for a much stronger scent throw. Our wax melts are made from 100% soy wax.
-
What are the differences in candle sizes/jars?Please see our handy size guide here
-
Why is my candle surface lumpy when it cools? This is a side effect of using soy and coconut wax. Unlike paraffin candles there are no additives and everything is completely natural so the wax will often lose it's smooth top after the first burn. There is little that can be done about this but it is completely harmless and natural and a sign that your wax is also natural.

How should I use Snapsticks?Break off a chunk (about a third) and pop it into the well of a wax burner. Please ensure you use a Wax Burner and not an oil burner which is smaller. Light a standard, 4 hour, unscented tealight and place in the burner. When the wax no longer releases any scent replace it.
-
How should I replace the wax in my burner? The easiest way to do this is to light a tealight for about 30 seconds which should be just enough time for the wax to loosen from the burner. It should now slide right out and you can wipe the well with a paper towel and put your new wax in.
